John Kandell

Sweden (1925-19991)

John Kandell was one the main contemporary furniture designers in Sweden. He was educated at University College of Arts Crafts and Design in Stockholm and also worked as a teacher there in the fifties. John Kandell designed furniture and interiors, glass and textiles, among other things, often in cooperation with great architects as Peter Celsing, Sven Ivar Lind and Nils Tesch. In the 1980's, John Kandell made contact with the furniture maker Källemo, which resulted in a range of Swedish furniture classics, mostly chairs. Kandell's late furniture is more and more approaching art and sculpture, simple, playful and happy humorous. One of Källemo's great commercial successes was "Pilaster" a simple but genious shelf which is still in production.
