Tom Dixon

Tom Dixon, born in Tunisia in 1959, is an internationally recognized British designer. He began his studies at Chelsea College of Art and Design but dropped out before graduating. There followed a most atypical course. He becomes a guitarist in a rock group and works in a nightclub at night. During the day, he learned to weld in a garage.

His career began with the creation of recycled metal furniture and sculptures which he recovered in the port of Chelsea. Twenty years later, he became artistic director of the Habitat firm, and embodied the success of a self made man. Meanwhile, his S-chair has made him a recognized designer. At the head of his own firm, he creates objects in a neo-industrial spirit which reflects his taste for raw materials and craftsmanship.

His creations earned him the prize for designer of the year Maison & Objet in 2014. His works have also entered several museums, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the MoMA in New York and the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. At the same time, he has been an honorary doctor of the University of Birmingham since 2004 and of the University of the Arts in London since 2007.
