Canvas is a refined woollen upholstery textile, which comes in seductive yet subtle colourways inspired by women’s couture. Crafted by acclaimed designer Giulio Ridolfo, it has a vibrant and intriguing look: from a distance it has the calm expression of a unicoloured fabric but, as you get closer, it reveals shimmering colour nuances, delicate contrasts and an elegant structure.

Featuring a relatively voluminous and soft weave, Canvas is constructed from material dyed yarns and, consequently, offers exceptional colour richness. Its yarns comprise up to three colours and, as two differently coloured yarns are used to create every colourway, each combines up to six hues. This combination gives the textile a particularly lively and individual character. Giulio Ridolfo: ’Canvas highlights how beautiful a yarn can be and projects a strong sense of craftsmanship.

’To craft the sophisticated and versatile palette for Canvas, Giulio Ridolfo blended subtle tones, creating a variety of graceful shades and highlight tones. In doing so, he developed colours, which he describes as, ‘unpredictable greens, warm greys and radiant dawn-like tones’.

Many of the colourways for Canvas complement those of Remix 2, another fabric crafted by Giulio Ridolfo for Kvadrat. The textiles share key characteristics: they are made from wool, are material dyed and combine colours in a similar way. However, whilst the fabrics share attributes each has a very distinctive personality: as Canvas features a more pronounced structure than Remix 2, colours emerge from it in a bolder way.

Versatile Canvas is suitable for both contract and private use: it is very durable and, as a result, offers a long-life span. Additionally, it is certified according to the EU Ecolabel, and has a high content of renewable fibres. Consequently, it is appropriate for those looking for a textile with a reduced environmental impact; for instance, architects or interior designers concerned with LEED certified buildings.

Since graduating as a Master of Fashion Design, from the Domus Academy in Milan in 1985, Giulio Ridolfo has amassed a wealth of experience as a textile and colour advisor to the clothing, footwear and interior design industries. He has collaborated with many of the world’s leading fashion and design brands, including: Tods and Hogan, Gianfranco FerrŽ, Moroso, Vitra, Fritz Hansen and Salone del Mobile. He has been working with Kvadrat since 2004.

Giulio Ridolfo’s methodology and colour compositions are far from traditional. He bases his work around the expression of an attitude or a choice. This results in the development of highly personal and distinctive colour palettes.

Giulio Ridolfo

Italian ‘colour master’ Giulio Ridolfo graduated with a Master’s degree in Fashion Design from Milan’s Domus Academy in 1985. Instead of following the traditional path of working with a conventional colour system, the textile designer developed his own personal and intuitive method of composing colour schemes to carefully match his clients’ needs. Since then, he has worked as a colour advisor and consultant in couture design and colour-matching for several of the world’s leading interior, clothing, and footwear companies, including Tod's, Gianfranco Ferré, Offecct, Moroso, Vitra, Fritz Hansen, Camper, and Maharam. Working with Kvadrat since 2004, Ridolfo has developed a special and exclusive system, an advanced colour display that follows an idiosyncratic approach relating to the colour and design quality of textiles.
